The distance between West and Southern Africa has often been measured in time spent, kilometres travelled, and administrative hurdles overcome. For too long, the dreams of young African entrepreneurs, students, and creatives have been stifled by the invisible borders of bureaucracy.
This is why the African Diaspora Youth Hub (ADYH) wholeheartedly welcomes the historic agreement between the Republic of Ghana and the Republic of Zambia to waive visa requirements for their citizens. The recent signing of ten Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) between President John Mahama and President Hakainde Hichilema in Lusaka is a clear indication of the dismantling of barriers and the construction of bridges.
At its core, this is a story about opportunity. It is a narrative where visas no longer dictate the rhythm of our ambitions or the reach of our potential.
For the African youth, this development signals "refined hope." It transforms the rhetoric of African integration into tangible reality. By waiving visa requirements for ordinary passport holders, these two nations have unlocked a corridor of opportunity that touches the lives of young people directly:
• For the Entrepreneur: Cooperation between the Zambia Development Agency and the Ghana Export Promotion Authority means a startup founder in Accra can more easily explore markets in Lusaka.
• For the Professional: Agreements on Standardization remove technical barriers to trade, allowing young manufacturers to export products with confidence.
• For the Connector: The Bilateral Air Services Agreement promises to make the physical journey as seamless as the legal one.
We are particularly optimistic about the inclusion of Diaspora Cooperation as a priority in these agreements.
Why should the diaspora care? Because this isn’t simply bilateral news between two countries. It is symbolic of the kind of Africa we’ve long aspired to see, one that opens its doors, harmonizes its regulations, and empowers its people to move and build together. For many in the diaspora who yearn to contribute, invest, or reconnect with their roots, this sends a powerful signal: Africa is ready to welcome its own.
The African Diaspora Youth Hub believes that when borders relax, ideas flow. When people move freely, innovation thrives. And when youth connect across regions, the future becomes borderless.
We applaud Ghana and Zambia for taking this bold step, but our work is not done. We call upon other African governments to emulate such forward-thinking policies. The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) cannot function on paper alone; it requires the free movement of the people who will drive it.
Many might see this merely as a travel benefit but trust us, there is much more to it. It is a symbol of trust, partnership, and possibility. The door has been opened. Now, it is up to us to walk through it.
